How to wear it
Two minutes of reading now saves a lot of fumbling later. Read it once, then keep the five checks in your head.
Putting it on
-
Put the hoodie on and unzip the pouch.
-
Hold baby against your chest and lower them into the pouch, tummy to you.
-
Settle baby high and snug: you should be able to kiss the top of their head.
-
Zip to just under baby’s chin. Their whole face stays clear.
-
Run the five checks below.
Five checks, every time you wear it
These come from long-standing babywearing guidance (the T.I.C.K.S. rule). They take ten seconds once they’re habit.
-
Tight.
Snug enough that baby is held close to you, with no slump.
-
In view.
Glance down and you see baby’s face, every time.
-
Close enough to kiss.
Baby sits high enough that you can kiss the top of their head.
-
Keep chin off chest.
About a finger’s width of space under baby’s chin, so their airway stays open.
-
Supported back.
Baby’s tummy and chest rest against you, back gently supported.
Babies under 4 months, born early, or with breathing or health concerns need extra care. Ask your pediatrician before babywearing.
- Dress baby one layer lighter than you. Fleece is warm and baby adds body heat.
- Feel the back of baby’s neck now and then. Sweaty or flushed means take them out to cool down.
- Take breaks. Your back will thank you.
- Babies under X lb or over Y lb.
- Cooking at the stove, running, or anything where you could fall.
- Hot drinks over baby.
Babies under 4 months, born early, or with breathing or health concerns: talk to your pediatrician first.
Check the zipper, seams, and pouch for wear. Stop using it if anything is torn or loose.
